Hannibal was born in Carthage in 247 BC to a famous and aggressive general, Hamilcar Barca. He grew up right around the time when the Carthaginians lost the First Punic War and lost most of its colonies. Hannibal came to control the Army when his father and his father's successor were both killed. Without a leader, the Army voted Hannibal as their new leader, and Hannibal soon started to attack the Romans. Many of Rome's allies helped Hannibal by revolting against the Romans and joining Hannibal. With the help of his new allies, he was able to cross the Alps and attack the Roman Empire. He was defeated after several years however and was forced to return to Carthage. Hannibal is also known for suggesting a form of Democracy in Carthage and for being one of the few that had success in fighting the Romans. Hannibal died in 182 BC at the age of 65
