Rome is thought to be one of the first city to have a reliable and active drainage and sewer system. It was used mostly for runoff and liquid waste water but archaeologists still debate whether the ancient sewers were used for moving human waste. Also like many of today's drainage system, the Romans system led to the Tiber River as most drainage systems run to bodies of water in modern times.
